Shine designed and produced the main title sequence for Apple TV+ and Legendary’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction and set within Legendary’s Monsterverse, the series tells a sweeping family drama that spans generations, continents, and decades, from the 1950s to the present day, and from Tokyo to San Francisco. At its center is a mystery connecting two families whose stories unfold against the epic backdrop of the Monsterverse.

The title sequence uses a bold graphic split-screen treatment, dividing the frame down the center to juxtapose contrasting images from the story: 1952 against 2015, San Francisco against Tokyo, analog technology against digital technology, and past against present. These visual pairings create a fast-moving montage that reflects the parallel timelines, locations, and generations at the heart of the series.

Designed to intrigue without revealing too much, the imagery takes on new meaning after watching the first season. What initially feels mysterious becomes increasingly relevant as the connections between characters, places, and generations are revealed.

Sound waves were a visual that teased the reveal of the monster in season two.

Kong plays a role in season two, as well as Godzilla.

Season one

The main title sequence for season one set the tone and the themes that crossed both space and time between 1952 and 2016. Mirrored and echoed imagery sets up the theme, the characters and the story.

The migratory patterns of monsters was a graphic device.

Media imagery was used to show the parallel stories.

This story is a family drama set against the Monsterverse.

The Monsterverse

Monarch fits into the Monsterverse as a secretive organization that studies and tracks giant creatures like Godzilla and King Kong. It connects the films by exploring the origins, history, and impact of these titans, providing a cohesive narrative that links humanity’s interactions with these colossal beings across generations.
