Shine designed, edited, and animated 27 original mini-documentaries for HBO's Life Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, collaborating closely with Larry David and Jeff Schaffer to create a unique visual storytelling format that blended historical education with comedy. Each short film explored a different chapter in history, serving as a cinematic prologue that established the context for the comedic sketch that followed.

The subjects ranged across centuries of world and American history, from the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States to Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone, the devastating battlefields of World War I, Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights Movement, women's suffrage, the Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere's midnight ride, the Moon landing, and many other pivotal moments and influential figures. Every episode distilled complex historical events into concise, engaging visual narratives that were both informative and entertaining.

Timelines

Shine designed a cinematic, nonlinear animated timeline that served as the visual centerpiece of the series. Rather than presenting history chronologically, the sequence unfolded as a rotating circular carousel filled with iconic imagery from pivotal moments in American history. Historic photographs, illustrations, documents, and graphic elements flowed seamlessly around the timeline, allowing events from different eras to connect visually in unexpected ways. The dynamic motion graphics created a rich, immersive experience that celebrated the interconnected nature of American history while establishing the show's distinctive visual identity.

Season one

The main title sequence for season one set the tone and the themes that crossed both space and time between 1952 and 2016. Mirrored and echoed imagery sets up the theme, the characters and the story.

This story is a family drama set against the Monsterverse.

The Monsterverse

Monarch fits into the Monsterverse as a secretive organization that studies and tracks giant creatures like Godzilla and King Kong. It connects the films by exploring the origins, history, and impact of these titans, providing a cohesive narrative that links humanity’s interactions with these colossal beings across generations.
